flying off
Wednesday, May 07, 2008 12:01 PM

just sent darren off last thursday. he flew to vancouver to further his studies in liberal arts. and i think that was really brave of him, though i would have thought australia was nearer. i mean, canada is like what? 18 hrs away. can you imagine sitting in a plane for 18 hrs? i cant.
but well, he went through all the procedures himself. contacting the school, applying for the uni transfer program, getting a family to stay with while he's there.. etcetc. and i applaud him for his erm, determinism. haha. apparently, he had gotten a job offer early this yr to work in DBS. but since his mind was already set on flying over to vancouver, he politely declined a job offer that many would have wanted . furthermore now that he's there, he told me that he just might migrate over permanently. okayy. wow.

seems like more and more pple are flying overseas nowadays. for me, i can definitely see the appeal. who doesnt want to mingle with the westerners? who doesn't want to study in a not-as-stressful-as-singapore-education-system system? who doesn't want to gain exposure and see the world at the same time? i definitely would want to, given the chance.

but, would you just drop eveything and leave just like that? arent there things in sg that you cant bear to leave behind? take darren for eg. he had to leave behind his aging parents. that he didnt really worry coz there are lots of other relatives and his maid to take care of them. what he couldnt bear and already misses is magnus, his dog. he cried when he left his house for the airport. and repeatedly reminded me to bring chelsie over to play with magnus. more like fight with him lah. 2 dominant males. 1 protective over its territory. ok anyway as i was saying, it would be difficult to leave behind several things in singapore. i used to hate it when close friends went overseas.

coz that happened when my best friend from kindergarten left. we used to spend days of the wk tog going to sch and then going for enrichment classes during the weekend. our mums would bring us around to play and stuff. then she left. and at first, came the letters. swift and long. then gradually, they became shorter. and short. and then, nil. she was just too busy to write anymore. there was the occasional phone call or phone message that stated how busy she was working with 2 jobs and studying at the same time. and now? her mum just came back to singapore to sell the old flat that they used to stay in last time. and we met her for lunch one day. and i heard that my best friend has already gotten a boyfriend. wow. call myself her best friend and i don't even know whats going on in her life. if this is not considered patheticness, i don't know what this is. and the same goes for wince. there goes another best friend off to somewhere unreachable. so don't hate me if i'm not exactly that happy when you're leaving to further ur studies overseas. i have my reasons for doing so.

danny once said this is all part and parcel of life. we move on make new friends and get along better with those current ones that we see almost everyday. those good pals from the past, well if there's time, sure why not, there's still the occasional meet up to catch up things we've missed. but is the closeness still there, thats difficult to say. if you're lucky, the bond can still be forged. if you're not and there's no time, pple will lose contact and drift apart and there goes your best pal. sorry are you sure thats you best pal? so what happened to him? erm. don't knw.

and that explains my hesitation to leave sg too if there comes a time for it. i don't want to leave my friends behind. i don't want to leave my family behind. i don't want to leave chelsie behind. but out of these, my friends encourage me to go. my family encourage me to go. am i the only one who feels all these? maybe no one will notice when i'm gone. its a good opportunity to gain experience anyway! good for her! go go go!

oh well.
